Rollerball

One of my favourite movies this is. I watched it again this afternoon. The original 1975 version starring James Caan (who can now be seen in the glitz-tastic Las Vegas on Sky One at various times of the day).

So now yes, Rollerball: set in the year 2018 the movie revolves around Jonathan E. played by the boy Caan who is the best Rollerball player ever ever. In 2018 the corporations run the world and dictate to it's citizens how they live.

Rollerball is the game that has replaced all sports, entertainment and war, but Jonathon E. becomes a problem for them as he comes to represent the individual achievement the game was supposed to suppress, and the corporations can't be having that now see.

And so it goes the struggle between the individual Jonathan E. and the oppression of the corporations. The original story was meant to be a stark warning of how corporations monopolise and control markets and populations and their attempts to crush the spirit of the individual.

To European audiences at the time it was a shocking insight into hegemonic corporations and a warning that didn't go unheeded ..the Americans audiences on the other hand sort of missed the point of the movie altogether and just wanted to start up a professional Rollerball league...now look at the state of the place.

Christ on skates, 2018 it's only round the corner. The Orwellian accuracy of William Harrison's leather-cladded and grey-suited prophecy is enough to make ones blood turn to ice no? I mean dear lord people, if you were to ever bang your head and forget who you are all you have to do is phone up Argos and they'll tell you everything you need to know about yourself.

They know everything. If only the Americans had paid more attention, if only they'd listened. It's too late now though. Do you hear me? IT'S TOO LATE! boomp3.com
